The Carbon Mesa neighborhood can only be reached by Carbon Canyon Road, starting at the Los Angeles County Fire Station 70 at traffic signal at the foot of Carbon Canyon Road where it intersects with PCH. Across the street, on the ocean side, is the eastern end of Carbon Beach.

Carbon Canyon Road becomes Carbon Mesa Road at one of the hairpin turns, then continues its winding path to a cul-de-sac at the end. This neighborhood is no planned suburb of identical houses, rather it is one of widely spaced individualized homes in unique hillside settings. Most of the homes have spectacular coastline views, are surrounded by trees and gardens, and include lots of isolation and privacy. The homes tend to be large and many have been upgraded to include swimming pools, tennis courts, oversized garages and other amenities.

In the Malibu fire of November 3, 1993 the home of Sean Penn at 22271 Carbon Mesa Rd. -- where he lived with Madonna when they were married -- was destroyed by onrushing flames that endangered a Los Angeles Fire Department engine and its crew who were trying to save the structure.

In a notorious celebrity incident August 6, 2005, papparazzi swarmed around the Carbon Mesa home of a friend of Britney Spears who was hosting a baby shower for the pregnant pop star. In the hubbub, someone shot photographer Brad Diaz with a pellet gun, launching an international press frenzy and a Sheriff's investigation.
